LLM Citations

LLM Citations are the explicit references or attributions that Large Language Models (LLMs) include in their generated responses to indicate the sources of the information provided.

Why It Matters

These citations are crucial for transparency, credibility, and verifiability within AI-generated content. Earning frequent and accurate LLM Citations is a core strategic goal of AEO, as it directly signals a brand's authority and is the new form of digital visibility. Citations for content synthesised about a specific brand can come from different medias:

  1. Brand - All pages the brand controls or has paid to promote service
  2. Social - All pages with user generated content
  3. Earned - Media outlets and news pages

How we use it

We use these citations to understand where content is fetched from. We take all links, tag the Citation Media and look at how often that page is cited. We also index the content of the page to better understand what the LLM's is chosing to cite. This gives us clues into how AI web search works, and how we should structure our content to get cited even more.
