AEO Dictionary
Citation Probability
Citation Probability refers to the calculated likelihood that a specific piece of content or a brand will be cited, referenced, or recommended by an AI system in response to a user's query.
Why It Matters
This probability for a Citation by an LLM is determined by a complex set of AI Search Ranking Factors that prioritize content authority, factual accuracy, relevance to the query context. Exactly how this algorithm works is not public, but by tracking citations over 100 of responses we gain understanding of what content is preferred. We use this to change and optimizing content to maximize citation probability. This is one of the core practices of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
