How to track AI citations for free

You don't need expensive tools to start. You need systematic process and consistent tracking.

Step 1: Build your query list

Start with 20-30 queries your customers actually ask. Not the queries you want to rank for, the questions people type into ChatGPT. Include:

  • Direct product/service queries ("best CRM for small business")
  • How-to questions in your domain ("how to reduce churn rate")
  • Comparison queries ("Salesforce vs HubSpot")
  • Problem/solution questions ("why is my conversion rate dropping")

Write these down in a spreadsheet with columns for: Query, Date Tested, AI Engine, Your Brand Mentioned (Yes/No), Citation Position, Cited URL, Context/Sentiment.

Step 2: Run systematic tests

Once per week, run each query through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Use the same wording each time. Use private browsing to avoid personalization.

For each response, record:

  • Was your brand/domain mentioned at all?
  • If yes, what position? (First mentioned, middle, footnote)
  • What exact URL was cited?
  • What was the surrounding context? (Positive, neutral, negative)
  • Which competitor brands were cited?
  • What was their context and position?

This takes about 30-45 minutes per week for a 20-query list across three engines.

Step 3: Extract the citation data

Most AI answer engines now show sources. In ChatGPT with search enabled, sources appear as footnotes with numbers. In Perplexity, sources show inline with numbers. In Gemini, sources appear as cards below the response.

Click through each citation. Record:

  • The exact URL cited
  • The page title
  • Whether it's your domain or a competitor
  • What specific information was pulled from that page

Don't just note "competitor cited." Extract which competitor, which URL, and why that URL was citeable. This is the forensic part.

Step 4: Track share of answers

After four weeks, you'll have enough data to calculate your share of answers. This is your new north star metric.

For each query, calculate:

  • Citation rate: How often you're cited out of total tests (e.g., 4 out of 12 tests = 33%)
  • Position score: Average position when cited (1st = 3 points, 2nd = 2 points, 3rd+ = 1 point)
  • Competitor share: What percentage of citations go to competitors

This shows your real AI visibility, not your Google rankings.

Step 5: Identify the citation gap

Compare queries where you rank well on Google but get zero AI citations. These are your citation gaps. Pull up the pages that ARE getting cited for those queries. What do they have that yours don't?

Common patterns in citeable content:

  • Direct, declarative answers in the first 100 words
  • Clear structure with descriptive subheadings
  • Data formatted in tables or lists (easier to parse)
  • Specific numbers and facts, not vague claims
